Website Design, Coding and Programming

The Joan Mitchell Foundation sustains and celebrates Joan Mitchell’s unique legacy as a leading American Abstract Expressionist painter. When the foundation first approached us for a website redesign, they had a very limited web presence – a few static pages that had to be edited by hand. The old site, without any significant information about Joan Mitchell’s life and work, was simply inadequate for an organization that also provides a rich variety of programs to artists and students alike.

Through several deep discussions and a thorough discovery process, we surfaced all relevant content and placed it within detailed sitemaps and wireframes. We then proceeded with a design that took into account the wealth of visual elements available to the foundation, in particular a signature green accent from Joan Mitchell’s palette used as a highlight throughout the site. For purposes of both form and function, we created several homepage templates offering different layout options. These templates can easily be switched in the content management system according to needs. Other features include an interactive timeline (that doesn’t require Flash) and a simple yet effective calendar page.

The site uses HTML5 with responsive code structure which, by automatically rescaling the site, allows it to fit properly on all the various screen dimensions – from smallest to largest – out there. The use of clean and up-to-date code insures that the site looks good and works properly on mobile devices.

We (and the foundation staff) are very happy with the results.
